The city of Marseille has always worked to preserve biodiversity and its inhabitants are increasingly following the movement. So we can see, hanging on the balcony of the BelleVue hotel, adorable little nest boxes to shelter wild birds.
What is their use?
These birdhouses wooden panels hanging from the hotel balcony provide a safe and suitable habitat for many wild birds who want to nest and raise their offspring. It is therefore essential for the reproduction of birds from the coasts of the Mediterranean sea. They provide safe shelter from natural terrestrial predators and from bad weather.
They make it possible, while urban growth develops, to compensate for the loss of their natural habitat.
Biodiversity awareness
These charming shelters can serve as educational tools by allowing people to observe bird behavior up close, which can encourage awareness of bird conservation and protection.
Nest boxes are also used by scientists to observe and study the behavior of sparrows, their reproduction and their migration.
Make your nest box well...
It is obvious that we must use untreated materials!… wood or coconut fiber, straws, wood shavings for good insulation. Coat them with linseed oil and place them at least 2 meters high.
Birds have different requirements for size, location and habitat type, so research into the local species before setting up nest boxes.
