Who are you, tourist friend?

Whether you are passing through Marseille on business or enjoying a few days of vacation at the Belle Vue hotel, you are what we call “a tourist”. And again, a pure Marseillais could have said a “foreigner”… But who are the tourists who come to Provence? What is their profile ? In a word, who are you, fellow tourist?

What is Provence?

Let's be clear. You might think of Provence as a geographically fluid region. But that's not the case at all! Every year, Provence welcomes over 23 million tourists. This region encompasses the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence , Bouches-du-Rhône , Var , and Vaucluse departments . These four areas together form a single destination, one of 20 selected by the government to benefit from a "Destination Contract." In other words, €30 million has been allocated to fund tourism-related initiatives.

Brazilian, Canadian, and Chinese

But let's return to our question, namely the identity of tourists in Provence: 25% are foreign visitors, primarily from Germany, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. However, some distant markets are experiencing significantly stronger growth than European markets, such as North America, Brazil, and China. The cities of Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, Les Baux-de-Provence, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, and Orange, as well as larger natural areas like the Camargue and the Verdon, are ambassadors for the destination to both French and international visitors.
