Let's not be embarrassed to use superlatives to describe the beauty of this bizarrely piece of peninsula. called Monkey Bay! The landscape looks like a paradise end of the world and yet we are in a district of Marseille, even if it is far from the center.
Facing Maïre Island
Move away from the centre of Marseille along the Corniche… just to look out over the open sea and the island! Once you have passed Pointe Rouge, continue towards the port of Goudes and dare to go further, to an unauthorised car park…
It then remains ten minutes of walking on a rocky ridge to reach the majestic bay and settle down, some on the protected beach, some on a flat rock unearthed further down.
It takes all tastes
The very “bon vivants” can settle down on one of the rare mattresses made available by the only restaurant which overlooks the bay. Needless to say, comfort is total in this case and the dishes served under umbrellas are very nice!
The bravest, armed with picnic baskets or even harpoons for fishing, take a more sporty approach.
You said weird...
Since there is not a shadow of a monkey, apart from very hairy human specimens, we remain intrigued by the name of this peninsula.
At the beginning of the 20th century, this idyllic corner was still frequented by all kinds of buccaneers and other smugglers. Children were recommended to act like the wise monkey who neither sees nor speaks nor hears...
