A cable car in Marseille by 2021

Its mission: to connect the Old Port to Notre Dame de la Garde. It must start from the foot of Fort d'Entrecasteaux and reach the Bonne Mère. The work is entrusted to the Systra company.

Reach the Good Mother more easily!

Toulouse, Orléans, Brest…

Urban cable car projects are multiplying in France.

They are much cheaper than trams or metro stations! They pollute less and they circulate in extreme weather conditions.

For this Marseille cable car project, the aim here is to facilitate access to the most visited site in Marseille: the Notre Dame de la Garde basilica.

We know that it has long stolen the spotlight from the Cathedral of the Major, even if it has seen a revival of interest since the development of the vaults of the Major, the village of Docks, the MUCEM and the Terrasses du Port .

To give you an idea of the attendance at Notre Dame de la Garde, imagine the months of July and August and the 400.000 visitors who flood onto the square to meditate facing the sea and appreciate the architectural prowess.

However, the streets are narrow, buses travel with difficulty….

The cable car project does not provide for no crossing the port.

Le transporter bridge had made it possible to cross both banks in its time but the cables of a cable car could spoil the landscape.

Jean Claude Gaudin, the mayor of Marseille, has repeatedly stated that he is opposed to it.

Not to mention that leaving the MUCEM would further increase the bill for the creation of this new work...

The cable car must therefore leave from Fort Saint Nicolas. It will cover a distance of one kilometer and a difference in altitude of 150 meters to reach the summit of the Garde hill.

The cost of the work is 800.00 euros excluding tax. Delivery: end of 2020 / beginning of 2021

Memories memories !

Marseille has already had a funicular.
75 years of service. 20 million passengers transported.
It was built by Gustave Eiffel, commissioned in 1892 and destroyed in 1967 🙁
