These architects who left their mark on Marseille

From Pierre Puget, through Le Corbusier, to Rudy Ricciotti: Marseille is a city steeped in history and cult places thanks to its renowned architects.

The Old Charity:

It was in 1670, thanks to the famous Pierre Puget let it all begin. Architect to the King and child of the neighborhood, he begins one of his greatest achievements La Vieille Charite. At the time, it was founded to lock up the city's poor and beggars.

The Vieille Charité fulfilled numerous functions for more than 2 centuries. Until the beginning of the 1940s, the building was completely abandoned. Until the architect's denunciation Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris says “Le Corbusier” who deplores that the building is in this state.

So the city of Marseille decided to renovate the building. After 25 years of work, La Vieille Charité now hosts several multicultural structures. Like the Museum of Mediterranean Archeology, the Museum of African, Oceanian and Amerindian Arts (MAAOA). But also temporary exhibitions and a cinema: Le Miroir.

The radiant city:

It is commonly called “La Maison du fada” by some Marseillais. This Corbusian construction was created to alleviate post-war housing problems.

Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris, known as “le Corbusier”, is a man passionate about architecture. He founded a new form of city, a “vertical village”. Thus, in the same building, all the community facilities necessary for life are present. There is a daycare, swimming pool, school, shops, library, meeting places, hotel, gourmet restaurant.

Just like the Hotel Bellevue and The restaurant La Caravelle, the Radiant City, is a Marseille institution. The vibrant colors are – red, blue and yellow – and emphasize the 50s.

The Mucem:

It was inaugurated on the occasion of the year 2013. The year during which the Phocaean city is European capital of culture. Le Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations (MUCEM), is located at the mouth of the Old Port and just 10 minutes walk from the Hotel Bellevue.

It's been almost 11 years since Rudy Ricciotti had imagined the very complex plans of the MUCEM. To build it, Rudy Ricciotti, which fights against the disappearance of professions. He called on several partners. He wanted to create “collective knowledge”.

Thus The Bellevue Hotel and the bar-restaurant the Caravel are also engaged in this fight. So they called on self-entrepreneurs, craftsmen and companions of duty to renovate the BelleVue hotel.
