Nestled behind City Hall and the Old Port, the Panier district is the oldest in Marseille — and one of the most charming. A two-minute walk from the Hotel Belle-VueThis is the first place we recommend to our clients upon their arrival.
A village in the city
With its stepped alleyways, laundry hanging from windows, colorful facades, and shaded squares, Le Panier feels more like a Provençal village than a big-city neighborhood. Over the centuries, it has welcomed several waves of immigration—Italians, Corsicans, Comorians, Armenians—each of which has left its mark on the neighborhood's architecture and cuisine.
Today, artists and new Marseillais are settling there for its authentic character, its art galleries and its village atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of the center.
Must-sees
La Vieille Charite — In the heart of the Panier district, this former 17th-century hospice is now an exceptional cultural center. Its Baroque chapel with an oval dome is an architectural masterpiece. It houses the Museum of African, Oceanic and Amerindian Arts (MAAO) and the Museum of Mediterranean Archaeology.
Place des Moulins — The highest point in the district, with an unobstructed view over the rooftops of Marseille and the sea. Calm and untouched by mass tourism.
Rue du Panier and its alleyways — Lose yourself in the pedestrian alleyways. Every street corner holds a surprise: a mural, a craftsman, a hidden café.
The Montée des Accoules — A monumental staircase that connects the Old Port to the heart of the Panier, lined with local shops and lively terraces.
Eat and drink in the Basket
The neighborhood is full of small family-run restaurants, Mediterranean grocery stores, and outdoor cafes. Venture down the side streets away from the tourist crowds to find the best local spots.
