Marcel Pagnol and Marseille; it's a story

“I was born in Aubagne, under the Garlaban crowned with goats, in the time of the goatherds”

Marcel Pagnol was born on February 28, 1895, when the Lumière brothers shot their first film in La Ciotat. Marcel Pagnol of the French Academy was a playwright, filmmaker, novelist, businessman, memoirist, memoirist historian of The Iron Mask and mathematician. This gifted man had several strings to his bow! In collective memory, he is ambassador of Provence and its capital, Marseille. But beyond the simplistic caricature that we have often been able to establish around its characters, their strength and their durability lie in the humanism that emerges. With accent or without accent, they were played in the cinema by exceptional actors. Pagnol's genius lies in this poetry of everyday life, in the finesse of the portraits of his characters. These little people have a picturesque language, with simple but true words, they touch the heart even today, with the same comic and emotional force.

Notoriety comes from Topaze in 1928, confirmed with Marius. He founded his own production company and film studios in Marseille.

Marcel Pagnol's books are available to read in the Hotel library Belle-Vue Marseille Old Port
